Henk van den Belt is werkzaam bij de LSG Toegepaste Filosofie sinds januari 1989. Hij is opgeleid als socioloog (Rijks Universiteit Groningen). Zijn interesses zijn wetenschapstheorie en constructivisme, voedsel- en consumentenethiek en filosofie van de economie. Tot mei 2001 is hij ook in deeltijd werkzaam bij de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven voor een onderzoek naar de theorie en historiografie van de contextuele techniekgeschiedenis.

Werkzaam bij de LSG Toegepaste Filosofie sinds december 1989. Van huis uit socioloog en filosoof (Katholieke Universiteit Brabant), vooral werkzaam op het gebied van de zogenaamde Kritische Theorie. Nu ook interesse voor het gebied van ‘Afrika en de staat’ en Afrikaanse filosofie in het algemeen.

Gilbert Leistra heeft "Bos en Natuurbeheer" gestudeerd aan Wageningen Universiteit van september 1995 tot en met augustus 2002. Tijdens zijn studie heeft hij onderzoek gedaan op het gebied van bos en natuurbeleid, communicatie en toegepaste filosofie. Na zijn afstuderen is Gilbert tot januari 2004 werkzaam geweest als projectmedewerker bij de afdeling Natuur en Landschap van de provincie Noord-Brabant.

Van januari 2004 tot januari 2008 is Gilbert werkzaam als AIO voor het project ‘Nature Policy in Transition: Towards a New System of Joint Control’. Dit onderzoek richt zich op de consequenties voor de administratieve effectiviteit, democratische transparantie en legitimiteit van het Nederlands natuurbeleid als gevolg van een verschuiving van "government" naar "governance": horizontaal van de staat naar de markt en civel society, en verticaal van nationale overheid naar supranationale en subnationale niveaus.

Tassos Michalopoulos (1972, full first name: Anastasios) is a Ph.D. researcher in the field of food bio-ethics at Wageningen University. He studied Agricultural Biotechnology at the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA, Greece), and he had his MSc in food biotechnology at Wageningen University, completing his thesis on enzymology for Unilever Research. His interest in philosophy and the ethics of food production impelled his occupation with the ethical implications of genomics technology, using as a case study tomato and potato production. His research project, titled "Trade-offs between cost-benefit analysis and societal values" is a collaboration of the Applied Philosophy and Business Economics groups, supervised by the Center of Bio-Systems Genomics (CBSG). He is a co-editor of the EurSafe organization NewsLetter.

Sinds februari 2005 is Rixt Komduur begonnen als AIO bij Wageningen Universiteit. Zij werkt aan het project “Ethics of the health card for food choices”.  Dit onderzoek houdt zich bezig met de ethische en communicatieve kwesties rond voedingsgenomics dat gericht is op het verbeteren van de gezondheid en het voorkomen van ziektes.

Hiervoor heeft Rixt biologie gestudeerd aan Wageningen Universiteit, waarbij zij een onderzoek gedaan heeft bij Numico Research en de differentiatie maatschappelijke biologie heeft gevolgd aan de UvA. Ten slotte heeft zij bij de leerstoelgroep Toegepaste Filosofie een onderzoek gedaan naar de verantwoordelijkheid voor de betrouwbaarheid van claims en risico’s van functionele voedingsmiddelen.

Vincent Pompe heeft een dotoraal in de biologie (RUL, 1989) en filosofie (UU, 1992). Sinds 1992 is hij als docent ethiek werkzaam bij het Van Hall Instituut in Leeuwarden, waar hij zich voornamelijk bezighoudt met het ontwikkelen van ethiekonderwijs rondom diervraagstukken. Daarnaast is Vincent verbonden aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen als ethicus binnen de dierexperimentencommissie (DEC) en als docent ethiek binnen de art 9 cursus.

 

Zijn PhD onderzoek richt zich op de ‘Ethics of Quality’ in de food service sector met als doel tools te ontwikkelen waarmee ethical room for manoeuvre gecreëerd kan worden om dierenwelzijn beter te incorporeren in het mozaïek van bedrijfswaarden.

Clemens Driessen is promovendus bij de Leerstoelgroep Toegepaste Filosofie en houdt zich bezig met een onderzoek naar de veelheid van ethische vraagstukken in de veehouderij. Hij is gespecialiseerd in de ethische en politieke aspecten van wetenschap- en technologieontwikkeling in complexe netwerken, en geïnteresseerd in de manieren waarop ethische overwegingen onderdeel kunnen zijn van technologisch ontwerpen. Clemens heeft Technische Bestuurskunde gestudeerd aan de Technische Universiteit Delft en Wijsbegeerte aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Hanneke Nijland works as a PhD candidate at the chair groups of Communication Strategies and Applied Philosophy. During her studies, she specialized in different aspects of human-animal relations and animal welfare. She has worked as consultant, researcher and coordinator, amongst others at WWF in Turkey, the Animal Sciences Group and Dier en Recht (the Animal and Law foundation). In 2008, she worked at COM as a junior researcher, researching hands-on experts’ perception of the welfare of animals in circuses, as part of a larger research 'Welzijn van dieren in reizende circussen in Nederland; Circuspraktijk in 2008' (Welfare of animals in travelling circuses in the Netherlands; Circus practice in 2008). After acquiring a PhD scholarship via an Open Call of Mansholt Graduate School, she is now conducting her own research: Disentangling the domestic contract - Interdisciplinary and multi-level approach to human-animal relations in animal husbandry, with case studies in Dutch and Turkish contexts.

Research abstract: Disentangling the domestic contract - Interdisciplinary and multi-level approach to human-farm animal relations, with case studies in Dutch and Turkish contexts

The goal of sustainable agriculture is to simultaneously maximize the triple bottom line: people, planet and profit. Social acceptability is increasingly important, particularly in animal husbandry, though perceptions on the subject diverge. Eurocentric ethical concerns can not easily be extended to EU candidates like Turkey, since geography, industrialization and development levels, but also value systems vary. Contexts within countries or roles people assume (e.g. consumer/citizen) can also affect the arguments with which people shape the domestic contract - the implicit agreement between humans and animals, defining what is acceptable or unacceptable for people when rearing and killing animals for food.
Especially in the expanding European sphere, cross- and intracultural dialogues are needed to understand and standardize this complex issue of social acceptability and develop effective policies regarding overall sustainability of animal farming. The proposed research focuses on gaining insight in the dominant elements of social acceptability of animal husbandry. It aims to distinguish and contextualize differences in arguments that the domestic contract is constructed with and find context-transcending perspectives, by performing case studies in two European extremes: The Netherlands and Turkey. Additionally, it aims to disentangle the citizen-consumer issue, by making both citizen ethical statements and consumer selection arguments explicit. After analysis by means of triangulation, policy-relevant tools for (self) assessment, dialogue facilitation and strategic intervention will be developed, linking arguments, underlying frames and pronounced decisions to relevant circumstances and related core value systems.

Prof.dr. Bert Blans bekleedt aan de Wageningen Universiteit de bijzondere leerstoel Wijsbegeerte. Deze leerstoel is ingericht door de Radboudstichting Wetenschappelijk onderwijsfonds te Vught en gedetacheerd bij de leerstoelgroep Toegepaste Filosofie. Het doel van de Radboudstichting is de katholieke levensbeschouwing te betrekken bij het onderwijs en de vorming van academici. Daartoe zijn leerstoelen wijsbegeerte of theologie gevestigd aan alle tien de openbare universiteiten in Nederland. De doelstelling komt voort uit de zorg voor de menselijke betekenis van en een verantwoorde omgang met wetenschap en techniek. Zonder reflectie op deze menselijke betekenis en gevoel voor verantwoordelijkheid missen wetenschap en techniek een deugdelijk oriëntatie. Het onderwijs is wijsgerig van aard en staat open voor studenten van alle studierichtingen.
